BOOK REVIEW
NEGERI PARA BEDEBAH DAN NEGERI DI UJUNG TANDUK
When I went to Bandung, I did a book hunting of Tere Liye's at Gramedia Bandung. I managed to buy 12 Tere Liye's novels and 1 book from Hanum Salsabiela & Rangga. 2 of Tere Liye's novels that are my favourite are Negeri Para Bedebah and Negeri Di Ujung Tanduk. So here is my review on those books.
1) Negeri Para Bedebah
I think now I can say what is my favourite genre of a storybook/novel. That is 2S : suspense and speed! In this book, the main character is Tommi/Thomas, who is a financial consultant. He is ideally a gentleman who loathes corruption due to his past family history. He especially hates his Om Liem, the uncle that caused the death of his parents. But, the blood is thicker than the water so family always comes first. He mightily saves his uncle's life and Bank Semesta eventhough his uncle is involved in corruption. In Malay, the saying of "menjilat ludah sendiri" applies here. He could go around the world and consult people on how to handle money, detest dishonest dealings and appear on international business magazine covers yet, his own family member is a fraud. However, I admire him because he is just. His uncle still get punished for his bad deeds and he himself presented his uncle's hands to the police officer to be judged. Along the 300+ pages, the event actually is happening from Thursday morning until Monday morning. It tells the events that can happen during weekend and how he deals and manipulates with his surrounding-people,place and time. I really like the word 'Petarung' which literally means that Thomas is actually a boxer at night. They have a match at a nightclub in Jakarta. But because he is a 'petarung sejati', he never retreats from the ring or any battle in his life. You either win or you will come back stronger. That is what a real fighter believes.
2) Negeri Di Ujung Tanduk.
Thomas makes a comeback but this time he is a political consultant. Apparently he studied Politic and Business at a renowned university during his degree life. His client is an honest and ambitious ex-governor who wants to uphold laws and is running for the presidential candidate. Thomas supports and consults his client for free because he believes that man and they shared a long history in the past. He firmly has confidence in his client that he will protect the weak and apply the same law to all individual, regardless of age, race, wealth and power. This event also occurred during weekend, from Friday until Monday.
The conclusion that I can make is, our hobby determines our habit and beliefs. Since Thomas and his friends are 'petarung sejati' ( real fighter), they carry that habit outside the ring. They fight corruption, dishonest cops, and even break the law in order to punish the criminals. In the ring, they know their opponent very well when they fight fairly and proudly. They then carry this routine/manner outside the ring hoping and proving that this world can be better when the rules and laws are applied to all.
